The Lagos State Chapter, Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has called for active participation of Engineers and other citizens in the 2023 electoral process, to guarantee good governance in the nation.
APWEN Vice Chairperson, Mrs Atinuke Wuraola-Owolabi made the call on Thursday during the hybrid November General Meeting/Technical Session of the association.
Wuraola-Owalabi, who is also the President, Coalition of Professional Women in Politics (COPWIP), said public and private sector and civil society groups must collaborate towards achieving credible polls.
COPWIP is a civil society group promoting the participation of female professionals in politics and demanding good governance.
Speaking on the topic ‘’Agitating for Good Governance; The Role of Female Engineers in The Electoral Process towards 2023 General Election”, she called for adequate and continuous voter education.
She said the public must be aware of the need for good governance to be able to make the right decisions for their continued empowerment and sustainable development.
She explained the principles and differences between good governance and government, adding that actions or inaction of citizens produce either good or bad leaders.
She enumerated eight ways female engineers could participate in politics and use their knowledge and expertise to groom Nigerians on right electoral choices to rescue the nation from bad leadership.
“Women engineers are better managers and well-focused,” she said.
She urged female engineers to offer free technical services to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at various stages of the electoral process to ensure seamless operations.
“The involvement of women engineers in Electoral process will aid balance in policy formulation, implementation and enforcement.
“People often say politics is a dirty game but should we fold our hands, watch and leave it in the hands of bad people?
“No, as we are agitating for good governance, we must advocate and encourage good people to be part of the electoral process.
“Therefore, I implore all women Engineers to get involved in partisan politics because politics is too important to be unprofessionally handled… Women Engineers – speak up and get involved,” she said.
Engr Mrs Monsurah Alagbe, Lagos State Chapter Chairperson, Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) spoke on the importance of women in reshaping the environment for a better nation.
“The sensitisation of the populace in the new technological convergence of the electoral process (Bimodal Voting Accreditation System) is very much needed and will be well handled/managed by engineers,” she said. (NAN)
