President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima have been commended for their attendance at the burial of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, held at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja.
Social commentator Reno Omokri highlighted the significance of their presence, contrasting it with the absence of former President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the funeral of their COAS, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in a plane crash in May 2021.
Omokri remarked, “When General Buhari’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, was buried after dying in a plane crash, neither Buhari nor Osinbajo attended his funeral, which took place at the National Cemetery, less than 20 miles from Aso Rock. But today, President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are attending the burial of their Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.”
He described Tinubu’s gesture as a testament to his administration’s prioritisation of the welfare of the Nigerian military, stating that it signals to service members that they have a leader who values their contributions and sacrifices.
“This is commendable and a sign to the Nigerian military that they have a Commander-in-Chief who truly cares for them, prioritises their welfare, and puts their interests ahead of his, unlike in the past,” Omokri added.
Omokri also expressed prayers for the Lagbaja family, asking for divine comfort during this difficult time.
He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, noting that “under Tinubu, Temporary Pains (T-Pain) will result in Permanent Gains.”
The funeral, attended by top government officials, military officers, and dignitaries, featured full military honours, including a 19-gun salute.
Lieutenant General Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5, 2024, was praised for his exemplary service and commitment to the nation.
